Steve’s Mini Mix | Briquettes for Small Stoves

Who is Steve’s Mini Mix for?
Steve’s Mini Mix is a good choice if:

What are the different briquettes like to burn?
Firelighting and quick heat
Dr Heat Firelighters are made in the UK from dried miscanthus grass and candle wax. They light easily and burn for approximately ten minutes, helping good, dry kindling catch fire.
Hotmax and UK Hardwood Briquettes light readily and produce heat quickly. They are useful for bringing a cold stove up to temperature or reviving a fire that has started to die down.
Both briquettes expand as they burn. Start with a small amount, position them across the fire and leave sufficient room inside the firebox.
Versatile everyday fuels
Goldies are compact softwood heat logs made from sawdust sourced from sustainably managed Scottish forests. Their shorter length makes them particularly useful in smaller fireboxes.
They produce strong heat with an attractive flame and can be used as a versatile everyday fuel. Goldies expand slightly while burning, so use one at a time initially and position it across the fire.
WillowWarm briquettes are made in Ireland from renewable coppiced willow. Their compact size makes them convenient for small and medium-sized stoves.
They produce excellent heat with an attractive flame and have an active burn time of up to approximately 1.5 hours. WillowWarm expands while burning, so start with a small amount and leave plenty of room around the briquettes.
Steady, longer-lasting heat
Hardwood Pini-Kay briquettes are made from densely compressed oak and beech sawdust. They produce excellent heat with an attractive flame, followed by a long-lasting glow.
Pini-Kay holds its shape well and does not expand significantly, making it particularly straightforward to use in a smaller stove.
OKO RUF briquettes are dense mixed-wood blocks that provide steady heat for approximately two to four hours, depending on the appliance and airflow.
Their compact square shape makes them easy to position in smaller stoves. They can be used as the main fuel or placed towards the back of the fire to help maintain a deep, lasting bed of heat.
OKO RUF may expand while burning, so do not pack the firebox too tightly. Leave enough space around the briquettes and begin with a small quantity until you know how they behave in your stove.
How do I use Steve’s Mini Mix?
Light your stove using a Dr Heat Firelighter and good, dry kindling, following the instructions supplied with your appliance.
Add Hotmax or a piece of UK Hardwood Briquette to establish a lively flame and bring the stove up to temperature. Once the fire is burning well, add Goldies, WillowWarm, Hardwood Pini-Kay or OKO RUF for a steadier burn.
Do not overfill a small firebox. Add one briquette at a time until you are familiar with how each product behaves in your stove.
Some briquettes expand while burning. Position these across the fire rather than pointing towards the stove glass, and always leave sufficient room for expansion.
Can I use these briquettes on an open fire?
Yes. The briquettes included in Steve’s Mini Mix can be used on suitable open fires as well as wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.
Some products expand while burning, so begin with a small quantity and leave plenty of room around the fuel. Take particular care that expanding briquettes cannot move towards the edge of the grate.
Always use a suitable fireguard and follow the instructions for your appliance.
Do the briquettes contain additives?
Our wood briquettes are made from clean, untreated wood by-product. They contain no artificial additives, chemicals or binders and are held together by compression.
How should I store the briquettes?
Wood briquettes must be kept completely dry. Suitable storage places include:
- a dry garage;
- a watertight shed;
- a porch or conservatory;
- a dry outbuilding;
- inside the house;
- a watertight plastic garden store.
Do not keep briquettes in an open-sided log store, uncovered outdoor area or damp building. Briquettes are already very dry and will absorb moisture if they are not properly protected.
Individual packs are wrapped to hold the briquettes together, but the packaging is not waterproof. The pallet wrapping provides temporary protection during delivery and is not suitable for outdoor storage.
Please make sure you can move the packs under cover when your pallet arrives.
How will my pallet be delivered?
Steve’s Mini Mix is delivered kerbside by Palletline, normally on an 18-tonne vehicle with a tail lift.
The driver uses a manual pallet truck, so the delivery point must be firm, flat and level. Pallets cannot be moved safely over gravel, grass, steep slopes, steps or uneven ground.
Delivery is included to most mainland UK addresses, although some locations carry a surcharge. Delivery normally takes 3–5 working days for most areas, and someone must be available to receive the order.
A smaller 7.5-tonne vehicle can carry no more than 720kg. It may therefore be requested for the quarter or half pallet, but it cannot be used to deliver the full pallet.
If you require a 7.5-tonne vehicle, select the access-restrictions option at checkout and add your request to the order notes. This is the smallest delivery vehicle we can request.

Made from:
- Dr. Heat Firelighters are made in the UK from dried chopped miscanthus grass soaked in scented candle wax waste from a candle manufacturing factory.
- UK Hardwood Briquettes are small, easy to break cylinders made in England by a company producing hardwood furniture
- UK RUF are a dense softwood RUF briquette.
- Beech Nestro are made from fine ground pure beech sawdust generated as a by-product from furniture, floor and house frame manufacture.
Burning characteristics:
- Dr. Heat Firelighters light easily and burn for about ten minutes, easily setting light to any good dry kindling. We like the fact they are a UK product and a highly effective, easy to use lighter.
- UK Hardwood Briquettes are easy to light and quick to reach a high operating temperature, which enables your stove to work at maximum efficiency. They burn with a lively flame to start with, then turn red hot and provide a good steady heat for a couple of hours. UK Hardwood Briquettes will expand lengthways as they burn, so place them across your fire rather than pointing towards the hearth.
- UK RUF are really easy-to-use-briquettes. They burn for around 1 – 2 hours depending on airflow and give off a steady heat for the duration of their burn time.
- Beech Nestro are acclaimed by many to be the best briquette in Europe. They are made from pure beech hardwood ground to a fine particle size and densely compacted into 4 x 2.5kg briquettes per 10kg pack. They are exceptionally clean to handle even when broken. Burnt whole or cracked into smaller sections they generate a good flame and burn for several hours with a lovely hot glow. Truly the best main fuel briquette you will ever experience.
This mix has been calculated assuming 90 days of evening fires.* Below is a guide on how to achieve this:
Start off with two of the UK RUF briquettes in an open v shape, this will create a heart in your fire.
Place a lit firelighter in the centre of the two RUF Oak.
Break up one UK Hardwood Briquette into four sections and place these round the firelighter.
Open the air vents fully for the UK Hardwood to get well alight, but monitor the air flow so it doesn’t get out of control.
After half an hour or so, place half a Beech Nestro on top of the well-lit UK Hardwood. Be careful to place it across the fire, so the end is not facing the glass, as it will expand slightly as it burns. This should last over an hour before needing more Beech adding. This mix allows for up to 2.5 Beech briquettes to be used each evening. To maximise burn time, do not prod the fire with a poker.
*We have based our quantities on an average 5kw stove, lit every evening around 6pm and burning actively until approximately 10pm, under average winter weather conditions. This will vary depending on the efficiency of your stove, weather conditions, outside tempertures and airflow settlings. Open fires are even more difficult to predict, as they are not as efficient as stoves. 90 days is a guide, not a guarantee. Pallet Orders are delivered by our partner couriers, Palletways, not our own drivers.
Your goods are delivered on a pallet, the footprint of which is usually approximately 1.2m x 1m. The height of the pallet depends on the products you’ve ordered but may be up to two metres high.
The maximum weight of a pallet is 980kg.
Our pallet courier will normally deliver your order on an 18 tonne lorry with a tail lift. This means the kerbside of your property must be accessible to a large vehicle. If a bin lorry can access the road then an 18 tonne lorry should be able to as well but it will be up to the driver to determine this.
If Palletways are unable to deliver to the kerbside of your property, for example because of access restrictions which mean a 7.5t vehicle will not be able to get to the property’s kerbside, we will need to put special delivery arrangements in place. These arrangements may incur additional charges, for which you, the customer, are responsible. If you think you may need alternative arrangements please let us know prior to ordering so we can get a quote for you.

Packaging
To keep them in good condition, these briquettes come in plastic wrapped packs. Please check with your local authority for recycling facilities. Packs are plastic wrapped but not always fully sealed, as the pakaging is there to hold the briquettes in place, not to waterproof them. Please take this into account when deciding where to store your briquettes. Pallets will arrive wrapped in plastic to protect them during their journey. This plastic will temporarily protect them from inclement weather but is not suitable for outside storage. Roastie Toasties
Roastie Toasties are small softwood briquettes that light readily and produce heat quickly.
They can be used in place of kindling to light a fire or to revive one that has started to die down. Their small size also makes them a useful main fuel for stoves under 5kW.
UK Hardwood Briquettes
UK Hardwood Briquettes are made in England from clean hardwood by-product.
They are easy to light and quickly bring a stove up to operating temperature. They begin with a lively flame before settling into a bed of steady heat.

How should I store the briquettes?

Do not keep briquettes in an open-sided log store, uncovered outdoor area or damp building. Briquettes are already very dry and will absorb moisture if they are not properly protected.
Individual packs are wrapped to hold the briquettes together, but the packaging is not waterproof. The pallet wrapping provides temporary protection during delivery and is not suitable for outdoor storage.
Please make sure you can move the packs under cover when your pallet arrives.
How will my pallet be delivered?
Easy Everyday Mix is delivered kerbside by Palletline, normally on an 18-tonne vehicle with a tail lift.
The driver uses a manual pallet truck, so the delivery point must be firm, flat and level. Pallets cannot be moved safely over gravel, grass, steep slopes, steps or uneven ground.
Delivery is included to most mainland UK addresses, although some locations carry a surcharge. Delivery normally takes 3–5 working days for most areas, and someone must be available to receive the order.
A smaller 7.5-tonne vehicle can carry no more than 720kg. It may therefore be requested for the quarter or half pallet, but it cannot be used to deliver the full pallet.
If you require a 7.5-tonne vehicle, select the access-restrictions option at checkout and add your request to the order notes. This is the smallest delivery vehicle we can request.

Versatile heat logs
Woodlets Heat Logs are made in Scotland from mixed softwood sourced from sustainable UK timber.
They produce excellent heat with an attractive flame and have an active burn time of around 1.5–2 hours, depending on the appliance and airflow.
Woodlets Heat Logs expand while burning. They can be broken into smaller pieces to suit your stove, but should not be packed tightly into the firebox.
Steady, longer-lasting heat
OKO RUF briquettes are compact mixed-wood blocks made in Northumberland using sawdust supplied by a local joinery business.
They provide steady heat for around 2–4 hours, depending on the appliance and airflow. Their compact square shape makes them easy to position in stoves and open fires.
OKO RUF can be used as the main fuel or placed towards the back of the fire to help maintain a deep, lasting bed of heat.
They may expand while burning, so do not pack the firebox too tightly. Leave sufficient space around the briquettes and begin with a small quantity until you know how they behave in your stove.

Hotmax can vary slightly in density. The softer briquettes are particularly useful for lighting, while the harder, denser pieces can be used as a main fuel.
Hotmax expands lengthways while burning. Position the briquettes across the fire rather than pointing towards the stove glass and leave sufficient room for expansion.
Beech Nestro
Beech Nestro briquettes are made from finely ground beech sawdust produced during furniture, flooring and timber-frame manufacturing.
Each 10kg pack contains 4 large briquettes weighing 2.5kg each. They can be burned whole in a larger appliance or broken into smaller pieces to suit your stove.
Beech Nestro produces a good flame before settling into a hot, long-lasting glow. Depending on your appliance, fuel load and airflow, the briquettes can continue providing heat for several hours.
They are densely compressed, clean to handle and particularly well suited to use as the main fuel once the fire is established.

They light easily and burn long and hot with an excellent flame. Highly suitable for the smaller stove of around 5kw. The bark content leaves more ash, which in turn helps with long burn time.
- UK Hardwood Briquettes are easy to light and quick to reach a high operating temperature, which enables your stove to work at maximum efficiency. They burn with a lively flame to start with, then turn red hot and provide a good steady heat for a couple of hours. Everyday Value Briquettes will expand lengthways as they burn, so place them across your fire rather than pointing towards the hearth.
- Hotmax are handy little cobs, two or three cobs will produce fast heat and flame, leaving a good ember base. Use a handful of Hotmax with a Waxling or Dr Heat firelighter in the centre to get the fire going quickly. They do expand slightly, so place them carefully in the fire so they don’t expand onto the glass window or hearth.
- Roastie Toasties can be used as a kindling to light or revive any fire. Being quite small they also make an ideal main fuel for small stoves under 5kw.
- Woodlets Briquettes are perfect for all stoves and open fires. Generating excellent heat with an attractive flame, you can expect an active burn time of 1.5 – 2 hours. Because they’re easy to break they can be used on all sizes of stove or open fire.

These briquettes come in plastic wrapped packs. Please check with your local authority for recycling facilities.
Each pack is plastic wrapped but not always fully sealed. They are not in waterproof packaging. There will often be gaps in the wrap, due to the wrapping process. The wrap is only there to hold the packs together, rather than to weatherproof them. Please take this into account when deciding where to store your briquettes.
Pallets will arrive wrapped in plastic to protect them during their journey. This plastic will temporarily protect them from inclement weather but is not suitable for outside storage. Please ensure you are able to cover/protect the pallet if you are not able to put it under cover immediately.

If a bin lorry can access the road then an 18 tonne lorry should be able to as well but it will be up to the driver to determine this.
If Palletways are unable to deliver to the kerbside of your property, for example because of access restrictions which mean a 7.5t vehicle will not be able to get to the property’s kerbside, we will need to put special delivery arrangements in place. These arrangements may incur additional charges, for which you, the customer, are responsible. Some briquettes are ideal for lighting the fire and producing quick heat. Others are denser and designed to provide steady heat over a longer period. Trying them in your own appliance is often the best way to discover what works for you.
This mixed wood briquette pallet contains approximately 220kg of briquettes and heat logs, plus natural firelighters to get you started.

This product arrives on a pallet. Delivery normally takes 3–5 working days for most areas, and you will need to be available to receive it.
Who is Meet the Briquettes for?
This discovery pallet is a good choice if:
- you are new to wood briquettes;
- you have recently installed a stove;

What are the different briquettes like to burn?
Firelighting and quick heat
Waxlings and Dr Heat Firelighters make it easy to get the fire started.
Hotmax, Roastie Toasties and UK Hardwood Briquettes produce heat quickly. They are useful for lighting or reviving a fire and can also be used as a main fuel in smaller stoves.
Versatile everyday fuels
Woodlets Briquettes and Woodlets Heat Logs are useful general-purpose fuels. They produce excellent heat with an attractive flame and can be used in a wide range of stoves and open fires.
Goldies are compact softwood heat logs made from sawdust sourced from sustainably managed Scottish forests. Their shorter length makes them particularly useful in smaller stoves, and they produce strong heat with an attractive flame.
WillowWarm briquettes are made in Ireland from renewable coppiced willow. Their compact size makes them convenient for small and medium-sized stoves, although they can also be used on an open fire. They produce excellent heat with an attractive flame and have an active burn time of up to approximately 1.5 hours.
Woodlets and WillowWarm expand as they burn. Start with a small amount, position them across the fire and leave sufficient room inside the firebox.
Dense and longer-burning briquettes
RUF Oak, OKO RUF, Hardwood Pini-Kay, Beech Nestro and ENVI8 are denser briquettes that provide steady heat over a longer period.
OKO RUF are dense mixed-wood blocks that burn for approximately two to four hours, depending on the appliance and airflow. Their compact square shape makes them easy to position in smaller stoves and open fires.
Hardwood Pini-Kay produces excellent heat with an attractive flame and holds its shape well while burning. Beech Nestro and ENVI8 are larger, densely compressed briquettes that burn hot over a long period.
Can I include ENVI XL?
ENVI XL is not normally included because of its large size and is best suited to larger stoves.

Do wood briquettes contain additives?
Our wood briquettes are made from clean, untreated wood by-product. They contain no artificial additives, chemicals or binders and are held together by compression.
Can I use these briquettes on an open fire?
Yes, all of the briquettes in the selection can be used on open fires as well as in wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.
Some briquettes expand while burning, so add only a small amount at first and leave plenty of room around the fuel. This is particularly important on an open fire, where expanding briquettes could move towards the edge of the grate.
Always follow the instructions for your appliance and use a suitable fireguard with an open fire.
How should I store the briquettes?
Wood briquettes must be kept completely dry. Suitable places include:
- a dry garage;
- a watertight shed;
- a porch or conservatory;
- a dry outbuilding;
- inside the house;
- a watertight plastic garden store.
Do not keep briquettes in an open-sided log store, uncovered outdoor area or damp building. Briquettes are already very dry and will absorb moisture if they are not properly protected.
Individual packs are wrapped to hold the briquettes together, but the packaging is not waterproof. The pallet wrapping offers temporary protection during delivery and is not suitable for outdoor storage.
Please make sure you can move the packs under cover when they arrive.
How will my pallet be delivered?
Meet the Briquettes is delivered kerbside by Palletline, normally on an 18-tonne vehicle with a tail lift.
The driver will use a manual pallet truck, so the delivery point must be firm, flat and level. Pallets cannot be moved safely over gravel, grass, steep slopes, steps or uneven ground.
Delivery is included to most mainland UK addresses, although some locations carry a surcharge. Delivery normally takes 3–5 working days for most areas, and someone must be available to receive the order.
If you require a smaller 7.5-tonne vehicle, select the access-restrictions option at checkout and add the request to your order notes. At approximately 220kg, this pallet is within the permitted weight for a smaller delivery vehicle.
A 7.5-tonne vehicle is the smallest vehicle we can request. If you are unsure whether a delivery vehicle can reach your property, please call us on 01387 731 210 before ordering.

Welcome to our new Ready Mix pallet, The All-Rounder – a selection of our best Nestro briquettes on one pallet.
Made from:
- Waxling Firelighters are made from fine, kiln dried pine strands (wood wool) coated in candle wax. They are 100% natural, chemical free and odourless, so no smell on your fingers after handling, and they’re completely safe to use.
- Hotmax is made in the UK from softwood fines (sawdust and bark) extracted whilst making dust free horse bedding. The wood used is all from sustainably managed British forestry and the Hotmax cobs are made using a product that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
- Aspen Briquettes are made from clean, kiln-dried aspen sawdust. The sawdust is a byproduct from sauna manufacturing; trees are not felled specifically to make these briquettes. They are well compressed with minimal dust. A lovely pale golden colour, with a gentle outer sheen from their excellent, high compression levels, these briquettes are as attractive as they are effective.
- UK Hardwood Briquettes are small, easy to break cylinders made in England by a company producing hardwood furniture
- Woodlets Heat Logs are manufactured by the same company behind our best selling Woodlets Briquettes, the new larger Heat Logs are made from mixed softwoods, compressed into dense, large, cylindrical briquettes. The sawdust comes from sustainably managed British forests all within 40 miles of the factory.
- Beech Nestro are made from fine ground pure beech sawdust generated as a by-product from furniture, floor and house frame manufacture.
Burning characteristics:
- A Waxling Firelighter burns for about 8-10 minutes, which is long enough to light any well-built wood fire. Because they’re densely bound, just one in the middle of a handful of cobs or kindlers lights easily. Sometimes you’ll find a Waxling that’s a bit too tightly bound – don’t worry, just twist it a little first to loosen the outer fibres.
- Hotmax Two or three cobs will produce fast heat and flame, leaving a good ember base. Use a handful of Hotmax with a Waxling firelighter in the centre to get the fire going quickly. They do expand slightly, so place them carefully in the fire so they don’t expand onto the glass window or hearth.
- Aspen Briquettes are large, nestro style heat logs with a hole down the middle of them. This makes them very versatile and easy to use. Broken into small pieces they are excellent for starting the fire; in halves or thirds they are a pleasantly hot, long-burning main fuel. They are perfect for general burning and do not have as fierce a heat as briquettes such as Beech Nestro and Pini-Kay. This means it’s easy to control the heat output. With controlled airflow, they can burn for hours while still giving out good, steady heat. Aspen in briquette form is an excellent firewood and has none of the drawbacks of aspen in traditional log form. It does not spit or pop, and is long burning. As with most nestro briquettes, Aspen briquettes will expand when burning, so unless you have a large stove we recommend you break them in half by tapping two together.
- UK Hardwood Briquettes are easy to light and quick to reach a high operating temperature, which enables your stove to work at maximum efficiency. They burn with a lively flame to start with, then turn red hot and provide a good steady heat for a couple of hours. UK Hardwood Briquettes will expand lengthways as they burn, so place them across your fire rather than pointing towards the hearth.
- Woodlets Heat Logs are a dense briquette weighing around 2kg , and is perfect for all stoves and open fires. Generating excellent heat with an attractive flame, you can expect an active burn time of 1.5 – 2 hours. Because they’re relatively easy to break they can be used on all sizes of stove or open fire.
- Beech Nestro are acclaimed by many to be the best briquette in Europe. They are made from pure beech hardwood ground to a fine particle size and densely compacted into 4 x 2.5kg briquettes per 10kg pack. They are exceptionally clean to handle even when broken. - Dr. Heat Firelighters are made in the UK from dried chopped miscanthus grass soaked in scented candle wax waste from a candle manufacturing factory.
- Hotmax are made from the waste fines (bark and wood) left over from the manufacture of horse bedding shavings.
- Woodlets Heat Logs are large, dense cylindrical briquettes, made in Scotland using pure wood from sustainable UK timber
- UK RUF are a dense softwood briquette, made in England
- Envi8 are made from clean, kiln-dried sawdust from a company in the USA that specialises in producing high quality fuels from sustainably sourced hardwoods. The sawdust is a byproduct from preparing the timber for other industries; hardwood trees are not felled specifically to make these briquettes. These large, dense briquettes are made from oak and hard maple.

Burning characteristics:
- Dr. Heat Firelighters light easily and burn for about ten minutes, easily setting light to any good dry kindling. We like the fact they are a UK product and a highly effective, easy to use lighter.
- Hotmax can be used as a kindling to light or revive any fire. Being quite small they also make an ideal main fuel for small stoves under 5kw. They can be variable in density with the harder denser briquettes being best for using as a main fuel whilst the softer lighter ones are best for use as a kindling.
- Woodlets Heat Logs are perfect for all stoves and open fires. Generating excellent heat with an attractive flame, you can expect an active burn time of 1.5 – 2 hours. Because they’re easy to break they can be used on all sizes of stove or open fire.
- UK RUF are really easy-to-use-briquettes. They burn for around 1 – 2 hours depending on airflow and give off a steady heat for the duration of their burn time.
- Envi8 are perfect for larger stoves – they will be too big for many smaller stoves. Each block weighs around 1.5kg and they are impossible to break. Because of this, they give a long, hot burn on an established fire and are ideal for keeping large, greedy stoves going.
- Beech Nestro are acclaimed by many to be the best briquette in Europe.
