How to choose the right wood briquette for your stove
Wood briquettes vary in size, density and burning characteristics, so the best choice depends on your stove and the way you use your fire. Smaller, easy-lighting briquettes are useful when you want fast heat, while larger, denser briquettes are generally better suited to a longer main burn.
For a small stove or quick heat, UK Hardwood Briquettes are easy to break and quick to get up to temperature. For longer burning, Beech Nestro give strong heat over a longer period and can be broken for smaller appliances. Hardwood Pini-Kay are compact, do not expand and work particularly well in smaller stoves and open fires.
Larger stoves can make good use of dense briquettes such as Beech Nestro and Envi8. Envi XL are designed for long burning in stoves of around 5kW and above, but they are very large and cannot be broken, so check their dimensions before ordering. RUF Long Burn are another option when extending the life of a stove fire is the priority.
Can wood briquettes be used on an open fire?
Yes. All of the wood briquettes in this guide can be burned on an open fire, but care should be taken as briquettes can produce a lot of heat and some expand as they burn. Add them gradually, avoid overloading the fire, use a suitable fireguard, and never leave an open fire unattended.
Which wood briquettes burn for the longest?
Burn time varies with the appliance, air flow and how the fire is operated. Dense products such as Beech Nestro, Envi8 and Envi XL are intended for longer main burns. RUF Long Burn is specifically intended to extend the life of a stove fire. Always burn with a visible flame and follow your stove manufacturer’s instructions rather than trying to prolong a fire by smouldering it.
