We would like this to become a permanent, full-time position for the right person; however, there will be an initial probation period of six months. The right person would move up to full-time hours (9-5) in September 2025. A full-time position would involve a wage rise to £16.00 per hour.

About us:

The Wood Fuel Co-operative is a small, family-run business, providing high quality wood fuel to customers across the UK. We run a retail shop in Dumfries which serves local customers, and we have an online shop serving customers across the UK. Orders placed on our website are prepared in our pack & dispatch department, then loaded onto lorries for distribution across the UK.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Your primary responsibility will be working in our pack & dispatch department, building pallets of wood fuel for national dispatch. This is a physically demanding job, which involves handling packs of product weighing between 5kg – 25kg. It requires great care and attention to ensure orders go out correctly. Manual handling training will be provided.
  • Driving a forklift will be a major part of your job; previous experience of this is an advantage but we will provide training.
  • You will also be responsible for making some local deliveries using our 3.5ton delivery vans, delivering pallets of wood fuel to our local customers. This involves handballing off full pallets of 10-25kg packs of wood fuel and carrying them to the customer’s fuel store, so you must be physically fit and strong. You will need a clean, current driving license.
  • As part of a small team, your role will be varied and will also involve serving customers, answering the phone and assisting with other tasks, as required.
  • It will be necessary to do housekeeping such as keeping the yard clean and organised, and ensuring the shop and packing department are tidy and safe.

Key requirements:

  • Good physical strength for manual handling; you may be handling several tonnes of product every day
  • Good communication skills; we pride ourselves on our reputation for excellent customer service. You will need to be polite, friendly and willing to take time and effort to ensure customers have the best possible experience with us.
  • Clean, current driving license
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in a wide variety of roles as part of a small, busy team

Beneficial but not essential:

  • Forklift experience
  • Customer service experience

Quick guide to choosing the best Wood Fuel for your stove and lifestyle.

*Break - We strongly recommend you break these briquettes in half (or less for very small stoves) because they do expand whilst burning and you don't want them to overfill the fire.
*Easy to light - We always use a Firelighter and Kindling Sticks to start our fires. Most briquettes are graded four stars to light because they are quite dense and require kindling.

Notes:

  • All stove and flue combinations tend to have different burning characteristics. Fuel that works well in my stove may not work so well in your stove, and vice-versa.
  • Most modern stoves are more efficient than most older stoves, meaning a modern quality stove will burn fuel more economically and generate more heat over a longer period.
  • Always try to burn fuel with a 'lick of flame'. Smouldering fuel to try to extend burn time is bad for your stove, flue and the environment due to unburned particulate matter in the smoke.
  • Be prepared to break briquettes into smaller sections to fit into your stove comfortably. Many briquettes do expand whilst burning and you don't want them to expand onto the glass.
  • The chart above indicates which briquettes are easy to break. Some are small enough so they don't need breaking. This makes for a cleaner environment around your stove.
  • All briquettes, except Everyday Value and Hotmax, benefit hugely from using kindling to light them. I suggest five kindling sticks will be sufficient, meaning a net should last 30 days.
