Fuels to Start your Fire
Say goodbye to frustrating newspaper and smelly firelighters.
It’s time to enjoy fast, fool-proof fire-lighting.
Waxling Firelighters are made from fine, kiln dried pine strands (wood wool) coated in candle wax. They are 100% natural, chemical free and odourless, so no smell on your fingers after handling, and they’re completely safe to use.
A Waxling Firelighter burns for about 10 minutes, which is long enough to light any well-built wood fire. Because they’re densely bound, just one in the middle of a handful of cobs or kindlers lights easily. Sometimes you’ll find a Waxling that’s a bit too tightly bound – don’t worry, just twist it a little first to loosen the outer fibres.
There are a few wood wool lighters on the market but many of them are very poor quality, so you need to use a few of them per fire. Waxling Firelighters are the best we’ve found, because you only need to use one per fire, which makes them better value then the cheaper packs. They’re also more attractive and cleaner than many alternative brands. Our staff love them!
Waxling Firelighters are a clean, natural and very effective way of lighting any wood-based fire. Because they’re so attractive, they’re also a very popular gift item, especially at Christmas. You can use them year round to light barbecues, chimineas, firepits and pizza ovens as well.

Packaged in Scotland by a small family firm, Waxling Firelighters come in small plastic bags of 40. The bag is widely recyclable. Please check with your local authority for recycling facilities.
Plastic is widely used for wrapping briquettes, in order to ensure that they stay dry, as a damp briquette will break up and be unsuitable for burning. The environmental impact of our products is important to us, so we are constantly working with our suppliers to improve the sustainability of their packaging by using cardboard in place of plastic wherever possible.
Kindling sticks are made in Latvia from sustainably sourced kiln-dried softwoods. Consistently sized and very attractive, they are a traditional way of lighting your fire.
An old-fashioned favourite, our kindlers are clean, dry and easy to light. They will burn much quicker than Hotmax or other cobs but will ignite a well-laid wood-based fire.

Hotmax Heat Logs
An easy-to-light, hot-burning cob. Perfect for lighting the fire or for reviving a dying fire.
Hotmax is made in the UK from softwood fines (sawdust and bark) extracted whilst making dust free horse bedding. The wood used is all from sustainably managed British forestry and the Hotmax cobs are made using a product that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
None of our briquettes contain additives or chemicals. They are made from pure, untreated wood by-product and are held together by compression alone.
Two or three cobs will burn for around an hour depending on airflow. Use a handful of Hotmax with a Waxling firelighter in the centre to get the fire going quickly. They do expand slightly, so place them carefully in the fire so they don’t expand onto the glass window or hearth.
Starting or reviving a fire. The fact that they’re a bit smaller than some of the other briquettes makes them great for quick heat and they’re brilliant for reviving a dying fire. They’re an ideal kindling replacement but can also be a main fuel in smaller stoves. The cobs come in a variety of sizes but larger ones can be broken if needed. They are not dusty and hold their shape well, so are clean to handle.
