The port barrels are sleeker and younger than most of the whisky barrels: they're usually only about 5 years old and wonderfully redolent of their original contents. So, even though it's raining, they're being prepared today as planters and water butts.
But the most fascinating and original use yet for one of our barrels has to be as a nest for Amazon Parrots! Apparently the birds will enlarge the existing bung hole, or a small hole the breeder drills, to the size they require and this behaviour triggers the urge to breed. You can see why the macaw in the photo looks so happy: what a cosy little palace! (If you want to know more about using barrels as bird breeding nests, just click on the pic and follow the link.) I'm guessing the faint alcohol fumes will just add to the ambience!
So...if you're after a younger and sleeker model (ahhh, if only!!!) - come by the Wood Fuel depot and have a look at the new line-up!
