Black Sunflower Seed

Sunflower Seed is available in the black husk (Black Sunflower Seed) or as whole kernels or chips, both of which are de-husked. Black Sunflower Seed in the husk is the cheapest way to feed sunflower, but the birds need to de-husk it before eating.

From the birds point of view, the longer they spend time at the table, the longer they are vulnerable to predation, so they seek out highly nutritious food that they can eat quickly. From our point of view feeding Sunflower kernels is the most economic way to attract the widest range of birds into our gardens.

Sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower plant which is widely grown across central Europe. These seeds are high in energy (584 kcal/100g) and are composed of 5% water, 20% carbohydrates, 51% total fat and 21% protein.

Although Sunflower seed leaves a pile of black husks under your feeder. However, some ground feeding bird such as chaffinch enjoy sifting through the debris looking for seed that has been unopened.

Birds attracted to Sunflower Kernels:

All of our common garden birds including all the tit, finch and sparrow families take Sunflower kernels (or Sunflower Chips) as their first seed of choice. In addition, nuthatches, woodpeckers and ground feeding birds such as thrushes, blackbirds and dunnock.

Perfect for:

Feeding through any traditional seed feeder, or on the ground or table.
