Hotmax is made from:
Hotmax is made in the UK from softwood fines (sawdust and bark) extracted whilst making dust free horse bedding. These cobs come in a variety of sizes (70mm diameter x 50 to 150mm long), but larger ones can be broken if needed. They are not dusty and hold their shape well, so are clean to handle. The wood used is all from sustainably managed British forestry.
Burning characteristics:
Two or three cobs will burn for around an hour depending on airflow. Use a handful of Hotmax with a Waxling or Dr Heat firelighter in the centre to get the fire going quickly. They do expand slightly, so place them carefully in the middle of the fire.
Perfect for:
Starting or reviving a fire. The fact that they are smaller than many other briquettes makes them great for quick heat and they’re brilliant for reviving a dying fire. They’re an ideal kindling replacement but can also be used as a main fuel in smaller stoves. Hotmax are very popular with those folk transitioning from using coal in open fires.
None of our briquettes contain additives or chemicals. They are made from pure, untreated wood by-product and are held together by compression alone.

The product comes in a paper sack, which is widely recyclable. Please check with your local authority for recycling facilities.
The briquetting industry uses plastic to wrap wood briquettes in order to ensure they stay dry, as damp briquettes break up and are unsuitable for burning. The environmental impact of our products is important to us, so we are constantly working with our suppliers to improve the sustainability of their packaging by using cardboard in place of plastic wherever possible.
