Why join us?
Membership of the Wood Fuel Co-operative is limited to those living in Dumfries & Galloway.
Each member loans the Wood Fuel Co-operative £99 (fully refundable) for the duration of his/her membership (minimum 1 year).
Every £1.00 you save by being a member is the equivalent of 1% interest on your £99.00 loan.
As a comparison:
- £99 invested in a bank or building society will earn around £2-£4 per year
- £99 invested in the Wood Fuel Co-operative will save you around £50 a tonne
A quick internet search to compare our prices will demonstrate to you the savings you can make by joining the Wood Fuel Co-operative.
A member buying half a tonne of wood briquettes or pellets, storing it at our Dumfries depot, and collecting it themselves as required, will be certain to save money.
Special Membership Offer
Instead of lending the Wood Fuel Co-op £99.00, DONATE £50.00 to the Dumfries Food Bank (through the Wood Fuel Co-op office) and receive lifetime membership of the Wood Fuel Co-op whilst supporting another worthy cause.
What is a Co-operative?
The internationally agreed definition of a co-operative is:
“An autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise”.
Co-operatives are accountable businesses that spread the financial risks and the rewards fairly among their members. They also balance the need to make a profit with the necessity of strengthening communities and protecting the environment.
Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
The principles, or guidelines by which co-operatives put their values into practice, are defined as:
- Voluntary and open membership
- Democratic member control
- Member economic participation
- Autonomy and independence
- Education, training and information
- Co-operation among co-operatives
- Concern for community
The co-operative model has proved to be one of the most enduring and successful ways of running a business for the last 150 years. Co-operatives can deliver products and services in a way that’s more responsible, accountable and sustainable
The Wood Fuel Co-operative is fully committed to these values.
How it works
Each member loans the Wood Fuel Co-operative £99 (fully refundable) for the duration of his/her membership (minimum 1 year). The co-op uses the member’s combined financial buying power to negotiate big discounts from brand name suppliers.
Registered Members of the Wood Fuel Co-operative are entitled to a substantial discount off any product in our range.
We hold an Annual General Meeting each year where members may vote on important issues, elect board members and examine the accounts.
Our Legal Status
The Wood Fuel Co-operative is registered with Companies House as a limited by guarantee co-operative, No: SC399132.
This structure provides an opportunity for wood fuel users to become members of a wood fuel co-operative that provides its members with consistently high quality wood fuel at an economic price whilst caring for the environment.
“Co-operatives are successful because they provide valuable services and save consumers money. Since the primary goal of cooperatives is to meet needs, not generate profits, they can serve their members at low cost.”
We manage our business with a view to generating an environmental, social and financial profit, with financial surpluses reinvested back into the business and to members in the form of subsidised wood fuel.
We are committed to servicing our members, help sustain local communities, provide local employment and safeguard the woodland environment.
